Research: Anti Smoking

Now I am going to be looking at adverts that sell particular products or service and the techniques the use.
Anti-Smoking advert

Mise-En-Scene
The colours used in this advert are very dull and grey, the effect of this is to show the lack of life the interviewer had, it also goes along with the advert as the interviewee died 10days later, it’s very emotional and gets to viewers to make them think whether their smokers or not but would they want to see someone die in that state or would a smoker want to die in that state. The strategy the advert uses is to pull on the heart string of the viewer to show that he's got his family close to him because he knows he hasn't got much time. This advert is very natural and realistic; it’s something that has happened to many people around the world. The signifier in this case tube shown in is nose during the advert signifies that the scene is possibly shot in hospital also we can see the hospital bed in the background.

This advert is targeted at people who smoke, might consider smoking and also people that know others that smoke so they can tell them about the risks their putting their life’s in and help them get them of the addiction. This means it’s quite a broad target because most people maybe everyone will know someone who smokes.

The sounds used are all diegetic sounds which come from him talking to the viewer telling his story and him breathing, other than that there is no sound in the background. The narrative uses internation (the way the narrator will project his voice) to suit the advert.

The camera shots used within this advertisement are extreme close up shot of the patients face to show what’s happened to him by showing close details on the face expirations, the emotions that he is trying to portray and to make sure that all of the audience’s attention is focused on him and shows the audience that this is what can happen to a smoker and your loved ones who do smoke this way the company can fully achieve the message trying to be portrayed and get the smoker to quit smoking. This pulls on the heart strings.

This advert is trying to shows the harm of smoking can cause but more than that it’s the helpline that they are focusing their attention on so that smokers can call and get advice on how to stop smoking, this is a called a “Call to action”. It is important that the NSH get their point across and help as many people as possible before it’s too late.

A contrasting
Anti-smoking advert

Mise-En-Scene

The colours used in the advert are quite dull, grey and gloomy. The advert has used the effect of smoke to show how it travels through the room over the carpet, the sofas and all the children game finally reaching a young child sleeping. This advert as used a real life situation and shown something that would happen in a family. The advert is based on a mother smoking outside the window think that all the smoke goes outside, however after watching the advert we know that “80% of cigarette smokers is invisible so no matter how careful you are they still breathe in the harmful poisons”. The child shown in the advert asleep and having the smoke around her and touching her will pull on the heart string of the viewer which was also done in the previous advert.

This advert is aimed at showing mostly parents that as much as they want to keep the smoke out it still comes back in and will affect people around you. So it’s necessary to smoke away from people because no matter how careful you are it will still affect someone. Statistically £23.6million is spent by the NHS due to second hand smoking by children. This just shows how much it really affects people especially children.

The company uses a range of different shots including long shot, close up etc. This way it shows a better affect  that and danger it can cause to people around and as much as you want to stop the smoke entering back into your atmosphere it will still enter.  The close up of the hand and showing the twitch of her finger just shows how they can feel the smoke and the way it affects them. It also pulls on the heart string because all this smoke which isn’t seen can change someone’s life as it did ruin her sleep.
The sounds used in this advert are non dieagetic, this is shown as the smoke is travels through the room you can hear the sound of the winds, also non digeatic sound is used when the child hand twitches it gives the sound of a heart beat and the most important one is the narrator giving information about the product they are offers which is a smoke free kit which will help people quit smoking.  The narrator uses internation in order to suit the advert better a project a strong voice to all the viewers.

Anti smoking advert-

Mise-En-Scene
This advert is produced in a joyful manner shows different families and the way their child copies them. The advert projects a real family and shows all the activities that a family, in terms of father and son or mother and daughter will do together. The advert actually makes parents think about their actions and what they should and shouldn’t do in front of their child. The colours used in the advert and very lively and joyful showing a nice and happy family. Compared to the other two adverts it has a lighter and much brighter atmosphere.
The second picture shows how a parent and child will do there things together and how smoking can be one of them actions. It shows a mother with a cigarette in her hand and her daughter coping her actions with a crayon.

This advert uses a range of different camera angles to show the life styles that all the families live with short and quick scene. However at the end of the advert they give a close up of the women smoking which was the biggest attention of the advert and her daughter copying her.

The sounds in this advert are non diegeatic, this is because there is a song playing in the background which is “I Wanna Be like You (The Monkey Song)" is a song from Walt Disney's 1967 film, The Jungle Book. The song was sung by Louis Prima and written by songwriters Robert and Richard Sherman. Using a song from a children’s book changes the atmosphere of the advert a suits it nicely. There also has a narrator at the end of the advert which uses internation in a serious way but also in a joyful manner to get the message off the advert with all the families and the serious part about stop smoking.
This advert is trying selling a service which will help them quite smoking. The advert ends with “smoking. Don’t keep it in the family” this was a good way to end the advert because if they smoke their children is more likely to smoke and then their child is more likely to smoke a it will go on an on.
In conclusion all the advert are trying to portray a message in order to convince smokers to stop smoking. Using the same strategy which is pulling on the heart string the anti-smoking advert was able to get to the viewer’s emotion to get them to use their service or product to help them stop smoking.
