Evaluation

Evaluation

In this evaluation I will be looking back at my Unit 30 advertisement production and seeing how professional the videos is, how we worked as a group and improvements we could of made. It is very important we do this so we know what we must change and make better so the production is more professional and successful in the market and helps improve sales. Clearly knowing who your target audience is and how you can get them to watch your production.

The problems we faced:

One of the problem we faced and didn’t have a choice other than adapted to the problem was the weather, now for some scene when it started raining in it didn’t have a massive impact on what we were trying to portray, however in other scenes we did need the weather to be more calm in order to film. If there was an issue that we couldn’t film then we would start editing the scenes we have already got in order to use the time more productively.

Another problem we faced were technical issues related to the camera and the editing software, sometimes the cameras wouldn’t be charged or available because other classes would have to use them which meant that the time we took out to film was being wasted because we weren’t able to do any recording, also sometimes the computers wouldn’t be available to use because other classes would be using the computers, however we did manage to get the editing done which is the good thing.

Our biggest issue was time, in order to film in our own time out of lesson could sometimes be challenging because one of the main characters wouldn’t be available to film, which meant that we would have to wait till we had everyone so we could film, also the timing issue became a problem because both off our units started to clash as we had different group for our single camera so making sure that was completed on time was very important, so in order for that to happen we organised different days in which we would focus on the different units, I think I benefited us quite well and actually helped us to finish the single camera production on deadline.

In order to achieve a high grade we did allow anyone from the group to add or change any of the pre-production we carried out, so all the pre-production tasks were completed by everyone from the group and every member did take equal part in ensuring that our pre-production will achieve a high grade an at a professional standard.

In our group we had three different members:

Ø  Hariss Zulfiqar (Actor/Director)

Ø  Saiful Hussain (Editor)

Ø  Zuned Cassambai (Camera Man)

We did nominate everyone to an individual task and role within the production team such as camera man, editor and director. However even though we all had individual roles we all helped and did get a chance of using the camera, editing and also directing things on how they should happen, so personally I think as a group when it came to filming we worked quite well, however on the other hand when it came to editing due to the circumstances one member off the group didn’t import much which made it quite difficult. Overall as a group I think we worked well and imported towards the production as much as possible.

Dairy Log

Diary entries
18/02/13
This was the first lesson that we got our brief, after reading the brief we started researching similar companies that sell the same clothes. We started to look at their adverts and also their websites to see the clothes they sell.

25/02/13
This week we started to think of initial ideas for our logo for the company. We listed all ideas which we thought are relevant and are also very catchy and the logo is eye catching.

04/03/13
This week I and my group thought about actual ideas that we could include in our advert. This included thinking about the mise-en-scene.

11/03/13
This week we came up with the idea for our advert. We then created our storyboard which showed every scene that we would have in our advert.

18/03/13
This week we completed the rest of the pre-production work that we needed to complete on blogger. We also planned out a shooting schedule which we would then follow.

25/03/13
Now we started to film

01/04/13
We carried on filming the next part to our advert to started to re do any shots which we thought didn’t fit in properly, this would help us to make a more professional advert, for our company just wear.

08/04/13
today we started editing on premier pro, we started to put our footage together to see how it looks at the beginning of our advert. We started to look at how we can use different effects to make the advert flow properly and nicely.

15/04/13
After we started editing our work it didn’t seem right and we thought we can make the advert better so we started to look at different ideas on how to make the advert better.

22/04/13
We started filming our new idea of our advert to see how this will be better but similar to our previous idea.

29/04/13
This week we uploaded all of our footage on to the computer and we started to edit our advertisement.

06/05/13
This week we carried on editing our advertisement. We applied the finishing touches to the
advertisement and we added all other things that we needed to like sound.

13/05/13
In today’s lesson we finished of our advert and started to evaluate how well it portrays our brief. “Make a clothing advert for an age group between 16 to 23 year old, the clothes that the company sells are similar to BANK.

Pre-Production: New story board

Change of idea

Change of ideas
After starting to edit our footage we thought that we can make our advert related more towards our target market and actually make them want to watch it.
The idea we had involved green screen which means a lot of time would have to be taken in order for the video to fit in properly with the green screen and become a professional looking advert.
The advert that we changed is still similar to the advert we planned to do, however there is a small changes which were made in order for it to nicely flow with each other.
The location stayed the same, the only thing that really changed was the shots and the storyboard.

Pre- production: Budget and Checklist

Budget
Equipment                             Cost
Camera                                    £1000
Tripod                                      £29
Mac                                          £1000
Editing software                    £1000

Pre-Production: Camera Angles

Pre-production: Advert overview

Overview: Our television advertisement will be an advert that has a snappy song in the background and the change of clothing will be done in a snappy and quick fashion. The clothes will change as the location or environment changes. The first scene is us showing the sportswear by having our main actor run into the school building in a sporty mood. There are many different camera shots like following the actor and a wide shot, which shows the actor coming towards the camera. The next scene starts within the building. The actor slowly walks through the doors with smart clothes and walks through the building towards the elevator. The actor then opens the elevator door and then walks in, faces the camera and tidied up his tie. After the doors close the actor will be seen coming out of a different elevator and wearing more casual clothes. Outside the elevator his friends, who are also wearing casual clothes, wait for the main actor. When he comes out they all follow him up the stairs and back out of the building. The actors then are shown just causally walking and then a camera shot of the main actor’s clothes are shown. The screen then goes to the logo name and other details.

Pre-Production: Story Board

Pre-Production : Products to advertise

From the research we carried out where we looked at company websites and adverts we decided to advertise the following products in our advert.

Pre-Production: Mood Board

Pre-Production: Location and Risk Assessment

Locations
> Swanswell Park
> Sidney stringer academy
> Open filed
> Green screen of a club (based in school)
> Streets

Risk assessment
While we are filming and getting the videos for our advertisement we have to consider the different possible hazards that could arise on the scene while filming. The different hazards would be things like tripping over the steps that we used for one of our scenes while holding the tripod. The running into the school must also be considered as we could collide onto someone or something. To ensure that we are safe during production we will have to assess the environment and make sure that the are is safe. Make sure that we pack away all the equipment properly before changing locations and making sure that there are no obstacles in the path at which our main actor will be running through.

Pre production: Mind Map

From these four adverts we choice as a group the style which we show 5 to 7 different products such as watches, clothing etc. . This will done by an actor which is this case will be a member of our group Haris Zulfiqar. He will be walking in 5 different locations and then show the image of the whole product.

Pre-Production: Brand Name

Brand Name:

We decided that our brand name would be #JustWear. This symbolises attitude, being modern, lively and wild.

Logo:

To decide our logo we went through a few different designs with different colours and ended at this logo. The logo's colours represent wealth, classic (gold), but the words represent style, swift and quick clothing for anything. We came up with hash (#) with the theme of twitter and these days twitter is a big social network, we thought it would something different a unique.

Before we came up with the logo we had a wide range of different names and ideas, in order to find the right one for our advert we went round our school and city collage to ask which name they think would be best for our advert.
We asked about a sample of 20 people mixed genders.

So from these results we decided that it would be best and ideal for use to use the brand name which had the most votes which in this case was #JustWear so we stuck to using that as our brand name which was confirmed.
Now we started looking at the logo be can design
from these two logos we asked a number of people which one they thought looked better, in their eyes in was the second one, we also got a quick view on why they thought that the answers came as:
> It looks more professional
> Has different colours
> Stands out
> Can be read shorter with just JW.

Pre-Production: Research

BANK – Fashion:

The bank fashion website has a large portion of the website page taken up by a board that has images of the existing products. The colours that are used to advertise these products are bright and fun which will automatically attract people from the ages of 16-23, because at this age people are really into fashion and things that look good. The website itself I think really appeals to people of that age because the website has cool magazine style pages and also has many images of the fashionable products like their onesises. This will be good research for our actual production because our brand, #JustWear, is all about attitude and having something to wear quickly but still be stylish, like the onesises on the Bank fashion website.

CHAMELEON – Fashion:
Chameleon is also a good website because it is appealing to people of the ages that have been specified. As this is a menswear brand it is appealing to men because it looks good and it is more appealing to men at the age of their 20’s as they have sensible clothing like t shirts, but also have clothing that is a bit wild and appealing to some people that like things like bands and other specific things. The website itself also is similar to the Bank fashion website in the way that the website has a middle section at which there is a moving image that takes up the width of the website, and the images change to show the different clothing types, like t-shirts, shorts and other different clothing types.

This advert is a clothes advert, the similar clothes that I will be promoting in my television advert. From the beginning the advert has strong brand name, the first thing the advert starts off with is a name saying the brand name River Island, Presents, Men wear.

The first action the company shows is two young males getting into a car, wearing more smart/ party wear outfits, this shot last for 2 to 3 seconds and the shot changes, then the shot is a wide shot showing a male coming out of his car, a convertible Mercedes-Benz wearing a bright red cost which shows the other types of products they sell, this shot last for 2 seconds.

After the shot we get views from a stylist talking about the different types of other products they have ad how they can make a style out of that in this seasons collection, this is done by a voice over which is digetic sounds.  Another thing the business does in this advert is shows ore then one outfit the customers will be able to make with their new collection by showing more than one person on screen in one go, they show a wide range of different camera angles in order to give a closer look at the fitting and the look of their product.

The main prop the business has used throughout this advert is a car, from the beginning to the end he business is showing a wide range of different cars and at this age the target audience be attracted in looking at the different types of cars.

The business has made the advert flow properly together by starting the advert with two males sitting in a car and finish of the advert with two males wearing completely different outfits in the car.

This advert has been made in a way that the models know that the camera is there and will be posing and acting as they know the camera is there which means that everything was done directly towards the audiences.
The advert finishes with the company showing their logo and their Facebook address where customers will be able to follow them.

Pre-production: Brief

Pre-production
Advert Planning- Working brief
Brief: Fashion chain that is aimed at 16-23 year olds. It’s a fashion chain that sells clothing that is similar to BANK.
My task is to make a clothing advert which is aimed at the target audience between 16 to 23 year olds.

Research: Research organization

RAJAR stands for Radio Joint Audience Research Limited is a media research organisation. The company start in1992 to measure the radio industry for single audiences in the United Kingdom. RAJAR is jointly owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation also commonly known as the BBC and the Radio Centre. ‘There are currently approximately 310 individual stations on the survey and results are published every quarter.’

The screen shot above is of the RAJAR website, this allows people such as public, organisation etc to get information on the radio listening figures so help them understand their market and produce a product which is guaranteed to sell in this competitive market.

The website is very easy to use to search for exactly what type of radio station information you need gather. The website allows the consumer to narrow down the information so they don’t need to waste time going through the website.

The screen shot above shows exactly all the information the consumer can gain from it, businesses and organisation will benefit from this in many different ways to gather market research. It shows specifically each radio station in the United Kingdom and their listening figures and also how long the audience listen to that radio station for, this will be beneficially for a range of different reasons.

BARB also known as Broadcaster’s Audience Research Board is also a research organisation similar to RAJAR that gathers measurements on televisions rating in the United Kingdom. This organisation gathers viewing figures something similar to box office on certain popular TV channels such as BBC, ITV etc. They gather all the statistics and present in a graph to make it easier to read it is also on their home page which makes it easier for the consumer to look for the right information they need. This is a good research tool for media related businesses and normally business to find out information about their target market. The website has graphs on a weekly basis, monthly and quarterly to make it easier to find as specific information which is up to date.

Ofcom is a government based organisation which started in 2003, established by the Office of Communications Act 2002 and received its full authority from the Communications Act 2003.  It is approved by the government regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom. The organisation helps the public stay away from harmful and offensive material. It makes sure that the public get the best from their communications services and are protected from scams and sharp practices, while ensuring that competition can thrive.

BBC: The British broadcasting corporation
This is a website that gives information on Britain itself it also includes world news but focuses more towards UK and Europe. Some of the information that can be found is things like:
Ø  weather in certain cities in Britain,
Ø  The different news headlines that are happening in the UK.
Ø  Sports
Ø  Technology
Ø  Education
Ø  Magazine
Ø  Health
Ø  Business
The screen shot above shows the homepage of the website which includes of the latest news, time, weather and it also allows the viewer to view the actually BBC news channel and by using iPlayer to catch up on the kids program. The website has pictures and also videos to show the news to make it easier to understand. The website is always up to date which makes it more reliable to gain more viewers. The website is clearly and easily laid out to make it easier to find exactly what the viewer are looking for. Compared to the websites mentioned above this provides information about the economy factor etc. You need to look for the research unlike BARB and RAJAR all the information is there.

Primary Research
Primary research is when a company or organisation carries out their own different methods to gather information on a certain product. The different methods they use are observations, questionnaires, experimentation, survey (Emails, telephone etc.), and focus groups.
The benefit of using observation is that the company gets 100% response feedback. Observation is when an employee will watch what’s happening and take in different areas the business operates in. They can be looking at what product customer buy, when the business is busy the most etc. This allows the business to understand what products are needed and how they can be designed.

Questionnaire is another way of collecting data which allows the business to get the information they need, they will need to think through the questions carefully to make sure they don't have too many which can put the public off. They will be including opened and closed questions to make it more constrictive. Using this information the business can make different forms of data to understand exactly what they need to do. This for me as graphs, tables, data base. It allows the business to understand their research easier and make it more efficient.

This is a questionnaire which is based on general films, trying to find out information about what type of films people like to watch today. With this information the business can produce a film which matches the results from the questionnaire after they have been properly analysed.
Advantages
All the questions that have been asked are well related in finding out about the type of movie the public would watch today. They have a reasonable amount of questions, which means the person filling in the questionnaire won’t get bored and give random answers. Also this questionnaire has got the questions laid out in a logical order, it hasn’t placed random question about genre and DVD all over the place it has its own section.

Disadvantages
This questionnaire only consist of closed questions which means that the business wouldn’t get much information on exactly what they would like to see in the movie, for example if most people said they like an Action movie the business doesn’t exactly find out what type of action movie they like, shooting, boxing etc. So it’s better for the business to narrow down the questions to get more accurate answer which will help them produce a movie which is guaranteed to be successful. The business hasn’t wrote on the questionnaire on how they should fill in the questionnaire in terms of tick box, circle, underline etc. The business must include this so that it makes it easier for them and the person filling in the questionnaire to clearly see the answer they have gave. There is one question which is “What film have you seen this year?” this question is very broad which means that the person writing the answer they might give too many or very less, it’s better for the business it be specific so that the person writes the name of the films they remember which also shows they were a good movie.

Advantages
This is a questionnaire which is based on general films, trying to find out information about what type of films people like to watch today. With this information the business can produce a film which matches the results from the questionnaire after they have been properly analysed. This includes opened and closed questions which means that the business will be able to get a wider range of ideas and will narrow down their thoughts so they make a product which meets what they have analysed. It also clearly shows how they should answer the question.
So compared to the questionnaire shown above this questionnaire will get more information and will be able to produce a movie which will be more successful than the other one from the questionnaire above.

Experimentation is when the company will allow the business to give samples of their product to a small group of their target audience, and to be able to get constructive feedback on what they think about the product. This way the business can make any improvement that might be necessary. This also benefits the business because will be able to understand the best methods to get to their target audience.

Observation
this is when an employee will watch what’s happening and take in different areas the business operates in. This can be looking at what product customer buy, when the business is busy the most etc. It gives the business back 100% response rate because the employee can directly look at what’s happening and what information it needs. Businesses marketing observer will look at what the business mostly sell in terms of the Music CD, what time are the most products sold, etc. This allows the business to know what they can do new to attract more customers. The benefit of this is that the observer is an employee that works in the business and knows all about that area. In a media production the observer will be looking out how the business will be looking out other ways the production can be done better. For example the employee can stay outside the cinema and see what movie is mostly being watched. With this information the business can then understand their audience and make a production they will like. The disadvantage of this is that it is time consuming and the employee might not get many results.
Secondary research
this is the research that the business will get fro0m pervious data they’ve carried out, or any data that has been carried out by someone else outside the business. Internal is data from inside the business and external is the data carried out, outside the business. Media production will use both off these methods to get has much information as possible.
Internal source
Data record-this is the data the business has kept from before such as sales they made on certain products, costs the business has and how they might be able to reduce that, the business will have information on employees if they need a replacement or someone else to do a specific job. All this information allows the business to be able to see what makes one production then other, when the business sells the most product and how the business a keep attracting customers. This type of research is qualitative and quantities this is because the business might have got information from primary research before which they collect informs of graph data and written information with more detail. However the data that has been collected will be from a set period of time. This cans the first 6month or the last the business will look at that.
Media organisation will also use questionnaires that have previously been done when other business create movies. This way the business can make sure that they are making the right film for their target audience, they can also look at how other film from the same genre did in terms of success and the amount of money they made.

Qualitative research- this is about people views and opinion, it is hard to analysis. It allows the business to get more ideas and not to allow the questions to narrow down.  This way the business can these ideas to make new products. Normally the business will use questions like (Why do you think that?) This way the business can actually see why their customer has chosen that particular thing.

Quantitative research- this is all about numbers and charts, for example how many people watch that TV program? This type of research is easily put into different forms of data and makes it easier to understand and look at the difference and compare it. Using this type of research has a benefit of be able to use this information another time and will be more valuable.
